Inauguration of the GECF Gas Research Institute (GRI) headquarters in Algeria
The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is delighted to announce the inauguration of the headquarters of its new Gas Research Institute (GRI) in Algiers, the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, which took place on 29 February 2024.This significant event was presided over by His Excellency Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Energy and Mines of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria; His Excellency Viktor Zubkov, Russia’s Special Presidential Representative for Cooperation with the GECF; His Excellency Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the GECF; Sheikh Mishal Al Thani, Chairperson of the GECF Executive Board; Dr Lamiaa Abo Shahba, Chairperson of the GRI Scientific Committee; and Mr. Azzedine Adjeb, Appointed GRI Director.
The GRI’s primary objective is to provide a framework for scientific and technological cooperation through information exchange, sharing of best practices, innovation, and technology transfer. Additionally, the Institute will focus on promoting technology development and utilisation along the natural gas value chain, conducting research on natural gas-related technologies, and providing advanced training.
The selection of Algeria as the host country for the GRI underscores the nation’s significant role as pioneer in natural gas development and a founding and active member of the GECF. Over the years, Algeria has demonstrated proficiency across the entire natural gas value chain, including exploration, production, transport, liquefaction, petrochemicals, and marketing, making it an exemplary host for the GRI.
